Are energy renovations climate action?

Yes! Energy renovations are the most effective climate action that a housing company can take.

Improving the energy efficiency of old residential buildings is important if Helsinki and Finland are to meet their goals for mitigating climate change. Energy use in buildings is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in Helsinki; more than half of Helsinki’s carbon dioxide emissions come from energy use in housing and other buildings. This is why the city also encourages individual property owners to improve their energy efficiency.

Helsinki has set a goal to become carbon-neutral by 2030. To achieve this goal, the energy efficiency of properties located within the city must improve. Even as Helsinki’s population grows, energy consumption should either stay the same or decrease. The City of Helsinki has established a free energy advice service for housing companies within its Building Control Services so that individual housing companies can also move forward with their energy renovations and emissions reductions alongside the city’s properties.
